Barista Essentials

Why should I study Barista Essentials?

Barista Essentials teaches you how to make espresso coffee. You do not need any experience or prior knowledge. In fact, this course is designed to start at the basics, and we go from there. By the end of the course, you will be able to prepare the ten main types of espresso beverages to a nationally-recognised industry standard. You will learn how to select and grind coffee beans, and extract the perfect shot. You will master milk texturing techniques and how to pour. You will also develop your skills serving coffee to staff and students during after school mock café services.

The course covers important areas of food safety and hygiene, which are critical in any commercial food and beverage business. You should do this course if you would like to develop the fundamental skills to gain work in a café.

Where does Barista Essentials lead?

This course is the first step to becoming a Barista. Whether you are just looking for part-time work in a local coffee shop, or you are planning longer term employment in the food and beverage industry, this course will set you up with the first steps you need. Many restaurants, bars, cafes, casinos, cruise ships, roadhouses, service stations, and fast food outlets now offer work to people who know how to prepare espresso coffee. You might even have a dream to start your own business.

What work will I do in Barista Essentials?

The course is ‘hands on’ and practical. We work on the machines and practise our skills. You will grind, tamp, extract shots, texture milk, pour, and repeat. You will serve coffee to others and work in teams to help each other. You will practise taking orders and solving problems. You will be required to complete some theory work and demonstrate your knowledge.

What do other students think about Barista Essentials?

I joined the barista course because I have always been interested in food and hospitality and through the practical work I got to experience how a real life workforce will function. I learnt how to communicate with customers as well as how to make different types of coffee.
